How to take a good photo with your phone

  1. Babies under 1: lay them on their back on a plain light-coloured sheet and take the photo from above.
  2. Older children: stand them in front of a plain cream or light grey wall, in even light with no shadows.
  3. If you need to support a baby’s head, keep your hand out of the picture.
  4. Take away toys and dummies, and make sure nobody else is in the photo.
  5. Children under 6 don’t need to look straight at the camera or keep a plain expression, and babies under 1 can have their eyes closed.
  6. Upload the photo above. For an online application, download the uncropped digital photo; for a paper form, download the print sheet.

Common questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The face detection and cropping run inside your browser. Your photo is never sent to a server.

What size is the digital file?

The download is your whole photo, not cropped, because the official service crops it for you. It must be at least 600 × 750 pixels, and the file is saved between 50 KB and 10 MB.

How do I print the photos?

Download the 4×6 print sheet and print it as a standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) photo at any photo shop or pharmacy. If you print at home, choose "actual size" or 100%, not "fit to page". Cut along the grey lines.
